Children
We are very mindful of the young patient and work as a team to ensure their time with us is relaxing and positive.
In our experience it is best to wait until your child starts kinder for their first dental visit but if you have any concerns, you can contact us for advice.
Parents need to be role models and teach good habits as soon as the teeth appear. They should be actively involved in their child’s tooth brushing, even up to the age of eight years old.
NURSING CARIES
can be a devastating problem for infants. Baby teeth can become decayed if allowed to stay
in contact with sugar containing liquids (even milk) for long periods of time. Children should not go to bed with a bottle
unless it is plain water. Early loss of baby teeth can affect how the adult teeth erupt in the mouth.
DUMMIES
can be used as a pacifier but do not coat them in anything sweet. Keep dummy use to a minimum and en-
sure that it has stopped before the age of five. Dummies and thumb sucking can cause orthodontic problems.
TEETHING
can often cause gum pain. Try using a cool teething ring or a teething gel such as Bonjela. If the child
seems unwell, make sure you seek advice from your dentist, doctor or health centre.
FISSURE SEALANTS
are resin barriers painted on the grooves of back teeth to prevent food lodging in them. They are
generally reserved for permanent teeth. Although sealants don’t guarantee the tooth will remain problem free, studies
have proven their effectiveness in preventing tooth decay.
